Patient transport to Ulm University Hospital
When the treatment goes beyond what the local hospital can do, the way leads to the Obere Eselsberg. Brenz Taxi takes you to Ulm University Hospital – 32 minutes from Giengen, 30 from Gerstetten, 30 from Niederstotzingen – for admission, for an examination and back again.
The destination at a glance
A campus is not a single building
Ulm University Hospital sits in two places in the city, with a good ten minutes' drive right across Ulm between them. At the Oberen Eselsberg you will find surgery, internal medicine and radiotherapy. At the Michelsberg, north-east of the city centre, are the women's clinic, the eye clinic, ENT and the children's hospital. Anyone driven to the wrong site there misses their appointment.
On top of that, each of the two areas consists of several buildings with their own access roads. That is why we ask for the hospital area and the building when you book – and set you down where you need to be, not at the nearest car park.
- We know the access roads. That sounds trivial, but it is the difference between a five-minute walk and twenty.
- An early appointment, an early start. Surgical admissions are often before seven. By prior arrangement we are there.
- Return trip open. In the morning you rarely know when you will be finished. Call us when the time comes.
- A companion costs nothing. Please still let us know in advance that someone is coming along.
- We come inside with you, if you would like that or you are not feeling well that day – as far as the reception desk, and into the waiting room if need be.
- After the procedure too. After day surgery you are not allowed to drive yourself – and you should not be sitting on a bus either.
Admission, discharge, outpatient clinic – three different trips
The three cases look the same from where you stand, but your insurer treats them differently. So that you know where you stand:
Admission and discharge
Inpatient, meaning with an overnight stay. Your insurer covers the trip without prior approval. All you need is a Muster 4 form – on discharge the ward issues it.
Outpatient appointment
Consultation, check-up, examination. This trip is only reimbursable in exceptional cases and needs approval. Ask us beforehand – we will tell you frankly whether it applies in your case.
Who pays for the trip to hospital?
- Hospital admission and discharge: Your insurer covers the trip without it having to be approved in advance.
- Prescription: Form Muster 4. For the discharge trip the ward issues the form – ask for it before you clear your room.
- Co-payment: 10 per cent of the fare, at least 5 and at most 10 euros per trip. Children under 18 pay nothing.
- Billing: directly with your health insurer. You pay nothing up front.
- Just an outpatient appointment? Then an exceptional reason and an approval are needed. Call us and we will tell you whether that applies in your case.
- A longer journey, the same rules: The fact that Ulm is further than Heidenheim makes no difference to the co-payment. It stays at a maximum of 10 euros per trip.

Seated – and what that means
Our vehicles are set up for seated transport. A walking aid, rollator, oxygen unit and folding wheelchair travel with you. If you cannot be transported seated, please tell us when we first arrange the appointment – we then organise the trip through a partner firm or point you to the right place, rather than leaving you stranded on the day.

How long does the trip from Giengen to Ulm University Hospital take?
About 32 minutes for 42.8 kilometres via the A7. We pull up at your door 40 minutes before your appointment.
I have to be at surgical admissions at 6:30. Is that possible?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know the day before and we will be at your door early enough.
I do not know which building I have to go to.
Read us what it says on the appointment letter – the clinic's name and the building are enough. We will find the rest.
Will I be collected after day surgery as well?
Yes, that is one of the most common reasons. You are not allowed to drive yourself afterwards, and we collect you right at the ward.
Does the trip to Ulm cost more than the one to Heidenheim?
Not for you. On prescribed trips you pay the statutory co-payment, regardless of the distance.
