Why patients from the Brenz valley travel to Munich
Not because of the distance, but because that is where the treatment is: heart surgery at the German Heart Centre, a second opinion at Großhadern, a joint replacement at Harlaching, a specialist clinic at Klinikum rechts der Isar. These are appointments nobody wants to postpone just because getting there is complicated.
- Four hospitals, four districts. Großhadern lies in the south-west, Bogenhausen in the north-east, with the Mittlerer Ring in between. Tell us the clinic, not just the city – that decides the route and the departure time.
- Allow for rush-hour traffic. Between 7 and 9 in the morning, driving into Munich easily costs an extra half hour. We allow for that rather than letting you arrive late.
- No car park, no walk. We stop at the hospital drop-off point and collect you there again.
- A companion travels free of charge. We only need to know in advance who is coming along.
- The return pick-up as well. After an operation in Munich, no long-distance coach is going to get you home. Tell us the discharge date as soon as you know it – the time of day can stay open.
Who pays for a ride to Munich?
Here too what counts is the nearest suitable place of treatment. For a procedure not available in Ulm or Augsburg – and that is precisely why people travel to Munich – that place is Munich.
- Hospital admission and discharge: reimbursable without prior approval.
- Outpatient appointment: requires approval, with a justification. We obtain the approval and write the justification as well.
- Co-payment: 10 per cent of the fare, at least 5 and at most 10 euros per trip. Children under 18 pay nothing.
- Billing: directly with your health insurer. You pay nothing up front.
- If the insurer says no, you hear it from us beforehand. We then agree a fixed price before anyone sets off.

Seated – and what that means
Our vehicles are set up for seated transport. A walking aid, rollator, oxygen unit and folding wheelchair travel with you. If you cannot be transported seated, please tell us when we first arrange the appointment – we then organise the trip through a partner firm or point you to the right place, rather than leaving you stranded on the day.

How long does the trip from Giengen to Munich take?
About 1 hour 31 minutes for roughly 133 kilometres via the A8, without traffic. For a morning appointment we set off earlier.
Which Munich hospitals do you drive to?
All of them. Most often Großhadern, Klinikum rechts der Isar, the German Heart Centre, Schön Klinik Harlaching and München Klinik Bogenhausen – but practices and specialist centres in the city too.
Does my health insurer pay for the trip to Munich?
For inpatient admission and discharge, without approval. For an outpatient appointment only with approval and a justification – we obtain that for you.
Do you wait in Munich until I am finished?
Yes. Over this distance we stay on site. If you stay overnight, we book the collection separately.
Can I travel there and back on the same day?
Yes, that is the normal case – about three hours of driving in total plus the appointment. With an operation it is of course different.
