Radiotherapy transport to the radiotherapy unit at Klinikum Heidenheim

We bill the trip directly to your health insurer; you pay only the co-payment of 10 per cent, at least 5 and at most 10 euros. This is how a course of radiotherapy works with us
A course of radiotherapy usually comprises 20 to 35 sessions on consecutive working days. The same route every day for weeks on end is tiring enough for patients without the added uncertainty each morning of who will turn up.
- First conversation: You call once, and we take down the treatment period, the time and the pick-up address. After that you never have to book again.
- We handle the paperwork. We obtain the approval from your health insurer for you. All you do is hand in the prescription.
- Fixed time: Your pick-up time is fixed for the whole series and follows your radiotherapy appointment.
- The same driver whenever possible: We schedule series trips so that you see the same face wherever possible, rather than a different one every day.
- We come inside with you. If you would like us to, or you are not feeling well that day, we walk with you as far as the reception desk. If need be we sit down with you in the waiting room and stay. That costs nothing extra and appears on no price list – it is about how you are, not about the clock.
- Return trip: we wait. However long it takes. You do not have to call, you do not have to book again and you do not have to stand in the cold – when you come out of treatment, the car is there.
- Changes of date: Appointment moved, machine out of order, or you are not feeling well? One call is enough and we adjust the pick-up time. With a series that comes with the territory.
Costs, prescription and co-payment
Trips to outpatient radiotherapy are among those the statutory health insurer normally covers – because the treatment takes place at high frequency over a longer period. The legal basis is § 60 SGB V together with the German patient-transport directive.
- Prescription: You need a “Verordnung einer Krankenbeförderung” (patient transport prescription) – the form Muster 4, issued by your treating doctor. For a series, one prescription covering the whole treatment period is normally enough, not one per trip.
- Approval – we obtain it for you: Trips to outpatient treatment require approval. For radiotherapy and chemotherapy the insurers grant it as a matter of course. You do not have to deal with it: you hand us the prescription, we obtain the approval and get back to you as soon as the go-ahead is there – and that settles it for every appointment in the series.
- Co-payment: 10 per cent of the fare, at least 5 euros, at most 10 euros – per trip, so once for the outward and once for the return journey.
- Co-payment exemption: If you are exempt from co-payments, you pay nothing at all. For a chronic illness the annual cap is 1 per cent of gross income – with a long series in particular, applying to your insurer is worth it.
- Billing: The rest we bill directly to your health insurer. You pay nothing up front and submit nothing. We also bill employers' liability insurance associations and the pension insurance fund directly.

What we drive – and what we do not
So that there is no surprise on the day of treatment, we say it plainly in advance:
- We drive: seated patients. A folding wheelchair and a rollator come along. We help you in and out, and a companion can travel with you.
- We arrange wheelchair transport: If you have to stay seated in your wheelchair, we do not drive you ourselves – we arrange the trip through our partner firm. You still only have to call us once; we take care of everything else.
- We do not drive: Stretcher transports and carry-chair transfers down stairs. That is a matter for qualified patient transport services.

Frequently asked questions about radiotherapy rides
Does my health insurer pay for the trip to radiotherapy at Klinikum Heidenheim?
As a rule, yes. Trips to outpatient radiotherapy count as high-frequency treatment over a longer period and are covered by the statutory health insurers. You need a medical prescription (Muster 4); we obtain your insurer's approval for you. The statutory co-payment of 10 per cent, at least 5 and at most 10 euros per trip, still applies.
How long does the trip from Giengen to radiotherapy in Heidenheim take?
About 17 minutes for 12.8 kilometres from the centre of Giengen. We pull up at your door 25 minutes before your appointment – driving time plus ten minutes' leeway, rounded to the next five.
Do I need a new prescription for every single trip?
No. For a course of radiotherapy the practice normally issues one prescription covering the whole treatment period. You hand it in to us once and we take care of everything else.
Will you come inside with me if I feel unsure?
Yes. We walk with you to the reception desk and stay sitting with you if you would like that or your condition calls for it. Just say so as you get in – or say nothing, we usually notice ourselves.
I use a wheelchair – will you still drive me?
A folding wheelchair and a rollator travel with us as long as you can take a seat in the car. If you have to stay seated in your wheelchair, we arrange the trip through our partner firm – you only have to call us once.
Can a companion come along?
Yes, free of charge. But please let us know in advance that someone is coming along – we want to know before the trip who we are picking up.
Will I be collected again after treatment?
We wait on site, however long the treatment takes. You do not have to call or book another trip – when you come out, the car is waiting.
What does the trip cost me?
For an approved patient transport you pay only the statutory co-payment: 10 per cent of the fare, at least 5 and at most 10 euros per trip. If you are exempt from co-payments, you pay nothing.
Do you drive the early appointments too?
Yes. We are on the road from 06:30, and radiotherapy appointments are almost always later than that. Trips outside our opening hours we take on by prior arrangement.
